Graduate Opportunities

I'm currently seeking enthusiastic students interested in pursuing graduate work on any area consistent with my current research interests. PSU's Department of Biology houses a vibrant and diverse group of researchers that includes many recent hires. Our faculty maintain active and interrelated research programs spanning all levels of biological organization.  Most of us also have collaborations with other PSU departments, universities, public schools, and/or government and non-government agencies.  Consequently, there are many opportunities for high-quality interdisciplinary graduate research and training at PSU.

If you are interested in joining the Estes lab, please contact me directly.  Please also visit the following websites for more information about our department, faculty, graduate studies, and application processes.  (For full consideration for fall admission, applications must be complete by February 15.)

Portland State University is located in downtown Portland and is the largest university in Oregon.  The location provides the benefits of a livable, culturally rich urban center and easy access to the natural diversity of the Cascades, Columbia River Gorge, and Oregon Coast.  The University has a diverse and motivated student body and is committed to sustainability and community outreach.  Research facilities in the department include the Vertebrate Biology Museum, Herbarium, Aquatic Vertebrate Facility, Keck Genomics Facility, HPLC Facility, and a new, 5000 sq. ft. Greenhouse Facility.  PSU is located adjacent to Oregon Health and Sciences University, which houses many additional core facilities available for use by PSU faculty and graduate students.

Undergraduate Opportunities

There are currently no openings for undergraduates in the lab; however, I'm always on the lookout for qualified undergraduate science or math majors interested in gaining meaningful research experience through PSU's McNair Scholars Program or through the Biology Honors Research Program.

Finally, I enjoy serving as faculty mentor for Bi 404 Cooperative Education Internships.  Previous interns have worked at the Oregon Zoo, Audubon Society, OHSU labs, and local dental and medical offices.  Internships are an excellent way to explore career options while earning upper division credit.  Contact me to make arrangements.
